Packing your tarp - Guide Gear / Kelty thoughts

Opening up a thread to discuss packing tarps typically 12' x12' in size. I have the Guide Gear (GG) 12 x 12, and have the Kelty Noah coming in shortly.

I really dont like GG storage tube/bag - especially since I pull the snake skins over my tarp before storing. The tube shape limits its ability or options to store in your pack -dry-. What have you done to store these styles of tarps in your pack? Even for short trips for lounging? Make your own stuff sack? I was thinking of making an additional mesh stuff sack to strap to the back of my pack to allow drying.

Out of all my equipment, by far, storing that tube storage bag is the biggest pain.

While we are on the topic - Do you typically leave your guy lines attached to your tarp? Typically I stuff them in the pockets I made in my snake skins. I see pros and cons to this.

I just strap my big 'ol Gear Guide 12x12 to the side of my pack - way to big to put in the pack regardless of whether it is dry or not.

The Noah's 12 is also a pain to pack into it's sack. The sack is too narrow and too long. I have seen a few posts recommending making a stuff sack, approx. 18 x 6 for a 12x12, but I have not tried this.
I'd be interested in reading other ideas regarding stuff sacks for 12x12 tarps.

I got tired of trying to stuff the Noah's 12 back in it's original stuff sack and now use an 8 X 14? stuff sack to make the job easier. The tarp isn't crammed into the sack and makes setup and take down so much nicer.
Everyone ought to believe in something....I believe I'll go set up the hammock!

Man... The Kelty Noah 12x12 is a bear to get back in the stuff sack if you're stuffing it. If you fold it (I know, tsk tsk), it will take up less than half the stuff sack, but that's also a lot of work. You'll probably want to replace the stuff sack with something else, but that tarp is not very breathable, making it tough to stuff.

Also, I leave my guylines and ridgeline attached.

I fold my Noah 12x12 to get it in the stuff sack (which I agree is not very practical). I use Prussiks to tie both ends of the tarp on the ridgeline. I remove one prussik and leave one end attached, and then fold the tarp maybe about shoulder width, and walk towards the remaining prussik while still folding it one hand after the other (kind of hard to explain). When that's done, I have the tarp folded and have a long rectangle. I then use the ridgeline to fold that long rectangle in half, and again in half to try and make a square that will fit the sack.

I was thinking of using snakeskins, but haven't found some that would fit this big beast.

I have a bishop bag of sorts (DIY from nylon shirt material) and I use it as a quick deploy system and simple storage system the ridge line stays attached and gets stored after being rolled up in a side pocket on the bag

when setting up the tarp I attach 1 end of line to tree pull tarp out of bag as approach the second tree attach line and adjust (center) with prussiks that are attached to tarp ends with a small carabiner

I use this for my 10x10 tarp and my 12x12 tarp I just change them out for conditions

Why do you need a stuff sack if you have snake skins? Pack it loose, or roll/fold it up and use the ridge line guys to keep it bundled.

If you are putting it in your pack, and it's wet, you'll probably want something to separate the wet tarp from your other gear.
    YMMV
