    Hand Scale

I've seen a few posts in the past with people asking how to weight there gear and most responses were either go to the post office, or get on a scale with pack, and the re-weight without the pack. Well I stumbled across a hand held crane scale that seemed fairly reasonable.

Anyone have experience using something like this? I think it would be convenient to have around.

Nice scale but probably overkill. Walmart will sell you a dial type for ~ $6 and a digital in the range of $25 that is perfectly adequate for gear. Look in sporting goods or luggage. One probably also wants a small platform scale for food preparation.
    YMMV

I already had a Feedback Sports scale for biking. Works great for quilts, packs, etc.

Generally, scales that have higher max weights are less accurate than scales that work with much smaller max weights. Example: A scale that is designed to work up to 7-12 lbs, will do much better than a scale that weighs things up to 50+ lbs. The exception to this generality is high-end expensive scales.

Good way to test your scale is to toss a nickel on it. 1 Nickel = 5 Grams..
10 Nickels = 50 grams. If it is accurate then it will be right on the mark every time.

I got a samsonite branded luggage scale. It's only good to the .1 pound but weighs up to 70lbs or so and cost about $15. So far it's great for weighing my full pack or larger pieces but it doesn't have the resolution for the "gram weenies".
