how does it fit/ride with the load lifters removed? Seems like an odd thing to cut off.

not bad to be honest, I got about 30lbs of gear in it and it feels good. I thought the same thing(odd thing to remove from a pack) not sure why they where cut off, to save on grams??? the pack is very very light if you can get all your gear in a 30 its a good choice
