North Manitou Island

Hey guys, and gals, I'm heading out next week for a long awaited trip to N. Manitou Island and am looking for some trip advice. I've read up on the general layout, maps and distances. I am planning to trek the full circumference of the island but was wondering which areas are worth the side trails or cut across the center to Lake Manitou for a night etc. I've got 5 days to spend on the island itself and the weather looks pretty darn good next week. Any must hit locations? Thanks in advance...Bush

If I was going to travel the whole circumference, I would start by heading south on the main trail and work my way around that way. There are lots of beautiful places all over the island, but I personally am partial to the great lake Michigan views and the history on the island. Also don't miss Lake Manitou, although I wouldn't necessarily stay the night around there tons of mosquitoes. A couple of weeks ago there were also lots if mosquitoes between Maleski place and Stormer camp too. Its a great island and I haven't found a single place on it that's not worth seeing :-)

South of the ranger station where the pines end is a cool spot to base..

I have to 2nd both sr and G. Not too much advice other than go where the Island takes you.

Thanks guys, I figure it won't matter too much. Since it's my first time, everything will be a new and interesting experience. Leaving Tuesday, returning on Saturday. I'll post some pics upon my return home...Bush

Have a great trip. I just made my reservations for this Sat the 3rd with a Tuesday the 6th return. We'll probably pass each other on the docks!

Hopefully the bugs won't be too bad. Planning on Fiskes for the first night, then head north, explore the potholes, then work my way down somewhere near Johnson's Place for my second night. I'll explore the south end Monday morning then head north Maleski's field for berries. A couple years ago (as a ground dweller) we camped at a great spot near Shipwreck point, so I'll probably head there. If anyone has any suggestions for spots to hang, I'm all ears.
