    SHT suggestions

    Hello All,
I am going to be heading up to the Superior hiking trail mid to late August. My cousin and I will be doing a 3 day 2 night trip (could go longer). It will be during the week as to avoid too much of a crowd. We are thinking about doing a section from Gooseberry falls through the split rock loop and back. We have never been up there and were wondering what the experienced SHT hikers thought of it. Any suggestions about this, or any suggestions of better places to go would be much appreciated. Thank You!

You can go to SHTA.org there is a lot of information there. I got the membership and the book has the trail broken down into sections with detailed info on each.

Yeah, I think I've seen just about every Shug video, lots of great info. He talks a little about the split rock river area in that third one. I think the first two take part a little north of where we will be

Great advice. I bought the trail guide a while ago and thats where I got the suggestion about split rock river. We added the gooseberry falls segment for some more distance. I guess I was hoping for some personal experiences that people may have had. Like "oh we stopped at this campsite but the river to filter from was dried up in August." Or even, "You gotta see Mount Trudy" We will also be stopping at the SHT headquarters on the way up.

The Gooseberry and Split Rock area get the bulk of the tourist activity. The weeks up to Labor day get the last push of family's before school start. There are not many camping sites on that section. Even during the week you might have a lot of company. The Split Rock loop gets a lot of day hikers.
I would look a little further north on the trail. Depending on how much of a challenge you want the Silver Bay to Hwy 1. Or Finland to Crosby might be another option.

Awesome, thats really helpful. I think we may go further north. I don't mind seeing a few others out on the trail, but I like to get out into the woods for some peace and quiet!

You will be way less invades my humanity during the week for sure. Silver Bay to Hwy 1 in finland is a real good section (Mt. Trudee) http://www.shta.org/Trail/TrailMaps/s067.php
Also the next sections north of this is good as well.
So many good sections))))) Lutsen Area is also fantastic.
I just did the section from Cross river to Oberg. Really good section to. Long hike between campsites though.
Are you doing an out and back or doing the shuttle?....http://www.superiorhikingshuttle.com

We were planning on doing an out and back, but a strait through is an option also.

I would give the shuttle a shot, but I've never used one before. We were just planning on an out and back thats why a little bit of a loop sounded appealing. Thanks for that link I may be doing some more research!!
