    Top Quilt Virgin

Good evening...or day depending on where you are.
So I'm buying my first top quilt and have questions on how the top should fit. Should I be able to wrap the whole quilt around my shoulders and upper back? I have very wide shoulders (59 inches...my mom tells me I'm big boned) ... and I am worried that if I don't go custom I'm going to be kicking myself later.
Any advice and comments for me would be greatly appreciated.

I would definitely contact one of the cottage vendors if you plan on buying one and talking to them, seems that would be the best way. I recommend Paul over at Arrowhead Equipment, great guy and makes some great gear.

For sleeping in a hammock no need to wrap around your back. I prefer a slightly wider TQ than normal, avoids drafts during the night when rolling from one side to the other. Based on my experience you'd be just fine with a 55" wide TQ.

    Thumbs up

I just bought my first top quilt and Paul at UGQ spent time on the phone with me to discuss length, width, fabric, down, snaps, and all other things having to do with top quilts. I really appreciated his patience with my questions and curiosity. And the service and speed were top-notch.

I finally ordered a 55" wide model and will be taking it on an 11-day AT hike soon (leaving Sunday to drive to NH & ME). Looking forward to snuggling under that top quilt on some mountains in Maine!

I'm not "big boned," just "big bellied," I suppose.

My UQ is a DIY version, my second, that I'm very happy with, though it was a ton of work.

Hammock Gear does make a custom wide and their service seems to be great. They answer quick and haven't yelled at me for annoying questions.

    Enlightened equipment and zpacks

Tim, over at Enlightened Equipment can make quilts up to 70" wide. And, Joe, over at Zpacks makes a double wide quilt 84" wide. Since these guys also do custom work you could ask them for any size in between.

Just to put another vendor option out there, Wilderness Logics has their "King Size" top quilts, as well.

    Hope it helps!

I ended up doing a custom order through Hammock Gear. It's in the process of being shipped right now. Apparently if you check the tracking order every ten minutes it does not make it come any faster
