    Jeff,

This time I used my Insul Mat Max pad which is tapered at both ends along with the ccf pad cut short. It still managed to slide up and out of the hammock on the foot end along with my sleeping bag. Also somehow the valve on the pad unscrewed so the pad was totally flat in the morning. By the pads sliding out of the hammock my shoulders to approx mid chest were laying directly on the hammock with no insulation.

The temps were in the low 40s to upper 30's?? I wasn't cold even with my bag used as a quilt drapped over me.

I still toss and turn all night but that is me. Doesn't matter where I sleep. I didn't fall out this time..guess that is progress.

why would you use an underquilt.. wouldn't it compress like a sleeping bag?

    Ewker,
I am very new to this (just ordered my first hammock) but I have done quite a bit of research. From what I understand, An underquilt goes on the bottom side of the hammock (not between you and the hammock). The quilt basically wraps around the bottom of the hammock and since you are not lying on it, there is no compression.

jr05 is correct. The underquilt doesn't compress under the hammock. You do have to watch out for those air gaps though.

Ewker - my page has pics and descriptions of all this stuff. You can see it in action and read (my opinions about) the advantages and disadvantages of each.
