    Hammocking: Civil War Sailor Style

Not your typical trip report here but this past weekend I was in Baltimore were my wife and I visited the USS Constellation where we found the Berth Deck. As most of you know, sailors on old ships often slept in hammocks. I thought some may like to see a little glimpse of maritime and hammocking history. I laid in one but it was not nearly as comfortable as my much longer camping hammock.

The hammocks were pretty well packed in there but judging from the open hooks and empty holes I would imagine a lot more could be squeezed in if needed.

If interested, there are more pictures of the hammocks, the rest of the ship and a few from Fort McHenry HERE.

Thanks for posting, I really like learning about American military history, especially the War Between the States period.

That and hanging below desks with an unbathed crew must have been great. I am sure sailors of that time were short anyway...

Every cannon team had a boy called a "powder monkey" that ran below deck to get more gun powder. The reason they used boys as young as 12 was because they were short and could fit under deck easier and therefore quicker.

I bumped my head a few times while on board.

It's all about how many sailors one can stack into a small space..

Comfort is relative, check out the beds at the Forts.
    YMMV

30" wide! Not much of a diagonal lay. No wonder their arms hung out.

Thanks for the tour. If there is a group hang, I'm there.

Very cool! Love learning new historical facts. My son is in the Navy so I'm going to show him this when he is home again
