Hi there!
I finally joined HF after quietly researching and getting ideas from you all.
Over a year ago I decided to ditch my tent and also my bed (!) in favour of a hammock, and it was the advice of HF members that helped in my decision-making. A heartfelt thanks to you all for that!
Despite being young (ish) and fit, my body was rebelling against sleeping in different beds and on the ground when tramping (what we call hiking down here). Sore back, sore neck, you know the story. Although I have gotten plenty of strange looks, I now prefer to hang in my bedroom and on the trail, and have really enjoyed the change in how I feel getting up in the morning.
Anyway - end of this month I am starting my thruhike of New Zealand for charity, and will definitely be taking my WBBB, despite a few Kiwis suggesting it will end in tears. Many others are telling me to go for it, and that the hammock will be fine (lots of alpine areas with few trees is the concern).
My blog is here, which I will update as I go.. and of course will happily submit a trip report if anyone is interested? http://kiwiscoutwalksteararoa.blogspot.com.au
The one thing I am struggling with at this moment - UQ versus a GG UL pad. I love UQs, but am thinking I will need the flexibility of going to ground. Don't want to carry both....
Thanks for reading this, happy hanging!
