Kia Ora and a Big Thanks to HF from New Zealand!

    Hi there!
I finally joined HF after quietly researching and getting ideas from you all.

Over a year ago I decided to ditch my tent and also my bed (!) in favour of a hammock, and it was the advice of HF members that helped in my decision-making. A heartfelt thanks to you all for that!

Despite being young (ish) and fit, my body was rebelling against sleeping in different beds and on the ground when tramping (what we call hiking down here). Sore back, sore neck, you know the story. Although I have gotten plenty of strange looks, I now prefer to hang in my bedroom and on the trail, and have really enjoyed the change in how I feel getting up in the morning.

Anyway - end of this month I am starting my thruhike of New Zealand for charity, and will definitely be taking my WBBB, despite a few Kiwis suggesting it will end in tears. Many others are telling me to go for it, and that the hammock will be fine (lots of alpine areas with few trees is the concern).

My blog is here, which I will update as I go.. and of course will happily submit a trip report if anyone is interested? http://kiwiscoutwalksteararoa.blogspot.com.au

The one thing I am struggling with at this moment - UQ versus a GG UL pad. I love UQs, but am thinking I will need the flexibility of going to ground. Don't want to carry both....

Thanks for reading this, happy hanging!

Whatever you do take, please take a camera, and use it often. You live in a country that abounds in natural beauty, let us have a few moments, too.

Welcome to the forums. I know nothing about NZ, but can you do what they do on the Appalachian Trail and pick up and change things out at certain drop points? Like use an UQ up until you know there won't be trees, then switch out to a pad? Trip reports and pictures would be great!
Keep movin', keep believing and enjoy the journey!

    Thanks for the warm welcome!
Camera - it is going to be my trusty old iPhone, I'll def take pics and put on my blog, maybe in a HF album once I work out how...

Good point about bounce boxes... not as well setup in NZ to do it, but I have family and friends all over the place, so they may be getting a mystery box smelling faintly of socks, chocolate and musty UQ! :-).. GrannyPat, love your CatHat by the way :-)

Gidday mate from a fellow kiwi. My setup is pretty much the same as yours and I wouldn't think there are many others in New Zealand yet. I live down in Feilding and work in Waiouru so if your looking for a place to hang around there then send me a message on FB (I just liked your fundraising page)
