    Question about Hennessey Scout

Ok, now that ole Pop has a hammock, I am trying to get my 2 teenage boys set up. I dont want to go and spend a big chunk of money and get them something like a Blackbird not knowing if they are going to stick with it or not. I am not only trying to get them hammocks but the rest of their gear as well. I have tossed around the idea of the Claytor Mosquito Hammock and small rain fly. It would cost 115 bucks x2 kids, so 230. Then I happened over to Hennessey's website and they are running a special where if you spend 100 bucks that you get a Scout with rainfly for free. So I was thinking, I could purchase the Expedition Asym for 139 and get the Scout for free. Two hammocks and 2 rain flys for 139 bucks. My boys are age 15 and 16, one is 5'8 and the other is 5'10. So what do you think? Will the Hennessey set up be ok for me to find out if they like it and will stick with it? Maybe Christmas do the upgrade to the BB?

Figure that HH is the typical gateway drug to hanging. you could probably unload the Expedition here with out too much trouble. Just don't make any irreversable mods to it. Stock HH seem to sell better. You've still got your boys at home for a couple of years anyway so it sounds like a plan to me. They might have a contest to see who gts which hammock. My understanding is the Scout is not the finest HH ever made but I have never used it so I have no first hand info.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I got two hammocks for the kids, a Byer Moskito and a Byer Traveller, for $37 from REI a few months ago.

Has anyone tried the Scout? If so is it too small for a teenage boy at 5'8" and 160LBS?

Thats a good length hammock for that size boy. I R 5 10" 190 and I have a HH backpacker UL and a Scout and both are comparable in weight limit and length.

Ditto to Ramblin defiantly a gateway. happy hanging

It's a tad longer than my claytor mosquito and I don't think I could be any taller in that thing and I'm 5'6" so it will probably be close when he's laying asym.

If your boys really enjoy using the Hennessey Hammocks, I recommend getting the zippered bug net mod by 2Q and ZQ. I had this done to my HH ULBA and it's really opened a lot of new possibilities. I can use it as a bottom loader or top loader hammock now. Now I can also use a Speer PeaPod sleeping bag. Great invention for keeping the backside warm in cooler months. Just a thought for down the road.

What do your boys think about your Warbonnet BB?

I just poseted the special in the Hennesy Section. I heard some stories about the older scouts being of poor quality. The new desing is up to my specs. I'm 5'6" and 140 lbs. Me and my son will take naps in his scout combined weight is around 190 lbs. My son and daughter will both crawl up in one and play around. I was excited this special came back on. I'm planning to get a Super Shelter and a free scout.

I've had a Scout (net was removed) for several years now. It's a pretty tough hammock. I also have to be honest and say it's WAY more comfortable now that I modified it to be asym. I wasn't really able to get diagonal enough in there until I did the mod. Other than that, no complaints!

One suggestion is to call HH and ask if they have any used hammocks for sale. That's how I got mine (without the net), and it's held up great!
