I have a TQ of 2 layers of IX. I stitched a piece of light fleece to the underside to help with the "clammy" feeling. It really made a difference. I use it down to about 40 degrees. I could go lower, but below that, I like down.

Do you get any wetness or condensation from the IX.
Do you think it breathes enough?
Enough is relative. It definitely does not breathe much. That's why I added the fleece. A little something, more than 1.1 oz nylon that I had, between you and the IX makes a big difference. Good luck with it. I like the idea of not worrying about it getting wet and the reduced weight of it for the insulating power it provides. Doesn't compress very well, but stuffs ok. The only time I had wetness was when it got below freezing.

It makes a good deal more sense to have a breathable top layer than a non-breathable one, especially if your under insulation is non-breathable. It's like going to sleep inside a plastic bag---no place for evaporated perspiration or breath to go. You'll wake up wet and wet = cold.
So.
What is your under insulation?
If its IX, then I'd recommend against an IX TQ.
It would probably work, but I'm not sure it would be very comfy.

Moisture is a big concern, especially when you get to the lower limits of insulation. You might start out toasty, but wake up at 3am chilled.
