    UCR vs. Whoopie Sling

So, here's a thing I've been considering lately.

First: A rundown of my suspension.

On either end of my hammock, I've got about a 1' dogbone with a carabiner in the open end. I feel like it's not only super convenient to not have to wrap stuff around my hammock when I take it down, but it's pretty clean (as in "no cordage everywhere"). From the carabiner, I can either hook straight to my tree strap with a marlin spike hitch or I can hook into a whoopie sling, then attach the whoopies to the tree straps (again with a marlin spike hitch and toggle).

With as long as my hammock is, more often than not I find myself foregoing whoopies altogether and going straight to the tree strap. Is it inconvenient? Not at all. Am I bored with it? Absolutely. I have to tinker with my setup.

I've done whoopies, but here lately I've had a UCR on the brain. I've never used one and wonder about how well it would do with my setup.

The question that begs asking now is what benefit (besides maybe a few grams) is there to using a UCR as opposed to a whoopie sling?
I used to be a somebody, now I just camp.

    Re: UCR vs. Whoopie Sling

I switched to UCRs because of less rope... Weight is fairly negligible,I have lots of other places I could cut an oz... But less rope to tangle and get in the way, that's something I could enjoy... I'm actually using dynaglide UCRs right now just for fun...

for me, it's not the weight, it's the bulk and use. Half the cord means half the bulk. But my main reason is they're just easier to use. Try them out and see how you like it, only way to know...

I woke up today and decided the same thing.... Time to tinker with my set up, I made my self two UCRS... Have not tried them yet, but found it odd a fellow member was thinking along the same lines as me today... The only thing I have left to figure out is were that thread was about using a prussick knot instead of a half hitch for a safty knot.

I think the thread you're talking about is here.

Obviously with my weight I couldn't use Dynaglide like Brute does, but I find the whole idea fascinating.

    Why not?
Is your Dynaglide going to be rated at less than your straps or carabiner?
It definitely is rated at stronger than my straps (~650lbs and DIY loops)and my straps have gone thru almost 3 years with little damage.

Just trying to get your mind juices flowing. It's only strange to think of such small diameter line holding you when it may actually be stronger than some of your linkage in the system.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

My straps - I don't know what the rating on them is. They were given to me.

The rest of my suspension is 1/8 Amsteel. Per the advice of somebody around here (maybe SilverSurfer) when I first got started, I shoot for a 3-to-1 ratio of strength to actual weight. At 375lbs, 7/65 Amsteel doesn't quite make it (but comes bloody close, if memory serves). I just wouldn't even begin to trust something as small as Dynaglide.

Who needs a neon suspension anyway?
