    Self-inflating Pad Guts

I have an old Thermarest self-inflating pad that has a few too many holes in it. I thought about cutting it open and removing the foam, but before I do I wondering about how well the foam from inside would work as bottom insulation for the summer, or even supplementing an underquilt.

The foam inside is open cell foam. That allows the pad with cover (no leaks) to fill or compress. If you used the open cell foam without a cover it would compress and allow for minimal insulation.

You want a closed cell foam pad. Or patch the holes in the one you got.

Thanks for the clarification. Have plenty of pads and this one isn't worth fixing, so off to the trash with it.
