Ideally, I would stick with the mod 3 but perhaps have some kind of opening on the opposite side to reach out and grab those small objects or adjust my quilt. I've been considering what kind of flap or closure would be easy to DIY without adding the weight of another zipper or the noise of velcro.
I'm thinking that maybe an 12" section along the body/screen border could be modded with something like the TED bugnet. It might droop open slightly if the sides weren't pulled out but I think a slot with an overlapping flap and perhaps some elastic would keep the bugs out. Not to rip off Warbonnet but maybe even add a small saddlebag at the same time. The closure flap could be a small pocket made of noseeum mesh so the contents (headlamp, glasses, etc) would help hold it closed. My skills are really lacking though so I won't start hacking on my HH.
Thanks for the feedback Zucki
I have the Mod 4, with the BE still intact. Same reasons as previously listed, I can use the BE in extremely wet conditions when I don't want to bump the tarp, or in buggy conditions when I don't want to let the critters in.
In standard winter conditions or during the day, the side entry rocks! Not to mention being able to reach in/out of the hammock. Since getting this mod, I have also finally invested in a UQ. Easy to adjust when you've got zippers.
As far as removing the bug net...I use it during the winter too. It creates a bit more warmth in the hammock, IME.
But...it's great to be able to roll that thing away during a hot summer day before the bugs come out to play. You get all the breeze that way.
For me, I'd rather have one hammock that meets all my needs than two that only meet part of my needs in and of themselves. Since I use the bug net year round, it's not added weight in my mind. But being able to roll it back when I DON'T want it, priceless!
Hey, thought of one other item that I liked but didn't mention the other day. I can zip the bug net back and use the hammock like a shelf for packing/unpacking, etc. I hate bending over (I know that sounds so lazy. I'll hike sun up to sun down but hate to bend over to pack/unpack). It makes the world fit my 6'3" perspective just a little better.
Just sayin'

Thanks Owl and Daddy for your feedback. Since I am all of 5' 2" and I lie to get that tall, the ground is not so far away :P
Another 3 votes for #4 here...
I send three hammocks to 2QZQ for a #4 mod and it was one of the best things I ever did hammocking.
Two were for friends' hammocks and the other was mine... Two of those Hennessy's stemmed from 2003 and are still going strong, each with at least 2 years (total nights!) sleeping in them, ranging from Sweden, Thailand to the Amazon...
Good luck with whatever choice you make, the work is gonna be superb!

You will love it. 2QZQ's quality and service are top notch!
Russ and I got the Mod 4 and sewed up that "birth canal" my foot always found its way through at night. The ability to take that net off and tuck it into its bag is great in the winter time when it is below freezing! I also at the advice of 2Q cut the ridge line and installed a Dutch biner to take it off when I want to sit up in it.
Take the plunge and don't look back!
