3rd Annual Oregon Winter Hang! :Planning:

Its that time again to get this planning and scheduling underway!
If we want the same basic weekend it would be Jan 17th-19th this year.
    (Can still be adjusted)

Last years Hang was a great time with 21 total hangers making it out and I hope we can have a repeat this year.
I have a possible change in location depending what the general opinion is... The last 2 years we have had the Hang
at Frog Lake, Ide like to add Lower Twin Lake as an option.

    Pros/Cons

    FROG LAKE:
    1/2 mile hike/snowshoe
    Bathrooms
    Developed Fire Pits with Grills
    Tables (thanks Rip)

But we have to deal with more people and the stinky/loud snowmobile riders

    LOWER TWIN:
No snow mobiles just occasional snowshoers and skiers
Same Parking Lot as Frog Lake
Very easy hiking options around lower and upper Twin Lake

But we have to hike/snowshoe just over a mile in
And we would no longer have the metal fire-pits with grills just rock rings.
and no permanent bathroom structures (there is one by the cars)

Both have about the same amount of tree options which is to say you could hold a convention of hammocks here.
Even the trail to the Lower lake is normally used enough that if you didn't have snowshoes you could manage it
without much issue (just easier with snowshoes)

Either way I am sure there will be enough Pulks there that you can borrow to help get your gear in (Especially Firewood)

I'm not going to vote because I like both options equally.

Honestly with as many people as we have usually I prefer frog lake unless we want to dig a toilet ditch down into the snow and hard ground. Bathrooms are preferable with a large group to reduce the ecological impact on the lake we are at. If it was away from a lake or water source campsite I wouldn't have a problem with it. If we are looking to get away from snowmobiles we could do Maxwell Butte Snow Park almost at the convergence of hwy 20 and hwy 22. Its 2hrs 45 or so minutes from Portland. There are areas of hammockable trees in that area. Ed and I have been there and he can attest to availability of areas and exploring activities.

right now - i like frog lake.

    bathroom facilities,
    tables and fire rings,
easy shot from portland, washington, the valley,
    easy hike in,
    well maintained roads,

i know the mckenzie ranger station has open (free) campgrounds in winter, with facilities (i think).

we could always look at like detroit'ish, jefferson area sno parks.

all that said --- i vote frog lake.

Only reason I prefer to keep it on Hood is it allows our Washington friends more ability to join. Its bad enough for some of them driving from Seattle area.. I would hate to add 2-3 more hours of winter driving in. It also allows for the out of area peeps to fly in easily and catch a ride to the Hang if they so choose.

I like Frog lake Snow park because it offers up some options, easy to get to with well groomed roads and people know where it is now. I just know a few people were not all that happy with the snow mobiles.. so offering up an option for though's who would like one. If people were willing to pulk out a bucket here and there we could set up a bathroom tent. (Coil brought up the ecological impact as well)

We have time to choose which location most would like since its the same parking either way so no stress there.

I didn't even think about the tables... nice point Rip

I probably should not vote, however, I might be able to show. I REALLY HATE SNOWMOBILE NOISE. So I would have to vote for the Lower Twin.

Well at least the nights are peaceful and quiet
If we stay at Frog Lake I will set up camp on the opposite side of the campground this year to be a little further away from the mass of them.

The only time I was annoyed by snowmobiles was hiking back and fourth to the cars.
I voted for the same location due to the number of people.

The snow mobiles are not that big an issue.
    Pluses for Frog Lake.
Easy hike in. Close to parking lot. Better for "new to winter camping" hangers.
    Restrooms are great to have.
    Picnic tables
    Fantastic trees
Good day hike opportunities.. or maybe trip up to Timberline for lunch.
Easy to get to from anywhere.
    Frog lake gets my vote.

While I like the idea of camping at Twin lakes... not for a group hang.
It is a 6 mile round trip in and out and may discourage new hangers or those that really don''t want the hike.
The trees are way better at Frog lake and the area is bigger to fit a large group.

Again... Frog Lake gets my vote.
