    Recommend me a Stand

Hello folks! I'm still a bit new here, so my apologies if this is in the wrong place.

I just moved to NYC and did not bring a bed as I decided to go full time hammock. Unfortunately my roommate is one of those "We have to do everything the landlord says" Types of people, so hanging from the walls or ceiling is no longer an option.

My room is roughly 10' by 11' and my hammock is 13'. I'd probably need to hang diagonally across the room, so a stand that's easy to take down is a must. My budget is around $130.

I did try the DIY pipe stand and it didn't work. I'm stuck on an air mattress till I get it sorted lol so time is of the essence

    Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

    Check out the TurtleLady stand.
She makes it out of bamboo and a metal pipe.
Many versions of it have been made, and it is
quite successful. Put plasti-dip or walking
cane tips on poles to protect your floor.

    Good Luck.

I just made 2 turtle dog style stands. Easy to make and about $50 to $60 total. You may have a length issue. I have a 10ft wbbb and used (2) 6.5ft poles to hang from. That gives me about 17ft total from end to end. You can message me if you have any questions.

Yeah, it sounds like you probably don't have room for a TL/TD stand. What I would do is get two 4x4s and put them up in the opposite corners of the room, flatten the top edge so that you can mount the toprail (tight) on each one, and do something to hold the bottom of the 4x4 in place (a couple of small wood blocks nailed to the floor would do the trick I would think). Since they are in the corner they won't slide sideways (as long as you have the toprail mounted tight holding it into the corner and the bottom is held in place too) and the toprail will do the rest.

If you were going to do something like that I would recommend that you use the hammock hang calculator to figure out the height of the top of the 4x4 and it would probably be a good idea to use a large eyebolt either mounted in the 4x4 or in the toprail (like hppyfngy does on his TurtleDog stands) for hanging. But make it the biggest eyebolt you can find.

I'm sure that's clear as mud

Or if you don't want to build, woot has a hammock/stand combo for $104 shipped. It's only 9' long so no need to hang diagonally. A 13' hammock should fit in it fine (mine does).

Instead of nailing the blocks to the floor for the 4x4, you can use opposing wedges driven under the post the wedge it against the floor and ceiling.

My turtle dog stand has a 9.5" pole. My 11' hangs easily under it. The entire stand is likely around 11.5-12' from end to end.

Get two 12' 2x4s. Use plain studs - not PT. Probably ~$4 each.
Cut each one twice so you end up with six 4' 2x4s. (Lowes or Home Depot will cut them for you for free)
Nail or screw it together into corner units as shown.
You should have two corner units.
Use two 8' fence toprail pieces for your pipe to span the diagonal of the room. Probably ~$10 each. Cut them so the finished length when put together is 14'-5" if your room is 10' x 11'. (if you go in the middle of the week and take a pretty girl with you and have her ask, they'll cut these for you for free too) If it's not exactly 10x11, build the corner units first then measure the distance with the units in place. Then cut rails to the measured length. In fact, do that anyway.
Good luck! Hope this helps. Post pictures when you're done.

P.S. This is probably not a good time to ask how I got my handle....

Thanks for your replies everyone I don't have a lot of tools and am not particularly handy. How difficult is the turtle dog stand to put together?

Samsara you're idea also sounds pretty good. What do you mean by flattening the top? And is there a way to not nail into the floor? Would nailing it to the floor be something noticeable at all? Hopefully this apartment will be fairly short term, so I can actually just hang from the ceiling and not worry about anal roommates.

Really should have gone with the do first ask forgiveness later approach :/
