No worries. There are no rules at EGL hangs. You can be as social as you want to be. We're all out there to enjoy ourselves which could include going off on your own to do a day hike or paddle, lounging in your hammock reading a book or sitting around a fire with others. Whatever you want.

Ok, the wife is seriously stoked about this - odd for us as we're not really "social" people. The only thing she's worried about is cold.

So, we have a couple of ranger blankets (aka poncho liners) from the army surplus, and my idea is that we put a sleeping bag against the bottom of the hammock, the ranger blanket outside of that and sleep inside another sleeping bag (cheapo walmart specials all of them) think she'll be warm enough?

I grew up in northern Saskatchewan, so as long as the wind chill is warmer than -60 I'm fine with just shorts and a t-shirt.

Just a bit of clarification; the sleeping bag and ranger blanket hang layered beneath the hammock, underquilt style and then the walmart sleeping bag goes inside, topquilt style? If you're compressing all of your bottom insulation between your body and the hammock, you might get cold. Make sure you have enough loft both above and below you and that any underquilts are really tight up against the bottom of the hammock and that the ends are sealed tight. Inserting one sleeping bag inside another is an inexpensive way of keeping warm. Of course, best would be a trial run one chilly night before the trip.

I also like Jayson's suggestions: DIY, No-Sew, 2-layer, 2/3 Poncho Liner UQ and a cheapie closed cell foam pad from Walmart. A couple of those CCF's duct-taped together to make them a little wider (see Shug's how-to videos) should work fine.

Another option...I have two ccf pads that start at almost 30" at shoulder and taper to about 15" at the feet.They are more than thick enough for October temps. You are more than welcome to use them.

yes, the plan was to use the sleeping bag/ranger blanket uq style - I did this with just the two ranger blankets this past weekend and had to kick off the flannel sheet I was using as a top quilt a few times to air out.

I found that if you don't fold the ranger blanket, it folds up around the sides of my hammock almost like a 3/4 peapod.

I purport that if you set up one ranger blanket as an underquilt (unfolded) with a nice bit of insulation taped/sewn/glued to it, and wrapped around the sides, with a ranger blanket across the top and a sleeping bag inside, you could survive a nuclear winter. (tongue slightly in cheek here)

Now to convince the wife I need to buy a bunch of extra gear to make her more comfortable!
