You guys may already know about this, but I just learned about this map page that shows the smoke pattern really usefully:

Then on right click the "active fires", and it shows the smoke.
I had tripped planned to take my friend on next week and spent all day yesterday researching alternatives, as the place I was going to take him is near where I live and it is quite smokey here and getting a little worse every day. I live off HWY 88 about halfway between the fire and the Beyer's lake area you guys are talking about and while I guess everyone's tolerance would be different, in my opinion it is pretty bad. I can see the smoke hanging in the air like a low fog and the smell is getting quite obnoxious. Gets a little better later in the day.
I figured out several options for my trip all of which involve long drives though, going either to Caribou Wilderness, or more likely south to Ansel Adams Wilderness, or possibly the Kaiser Wilderness. Even though annoying, its nothing compared to those poor people who live near the fire itself worrying about their homes or having to evacuate
