    Hennessey Hex Tarp Question

I purchased a HH Safari for another member. It came with a hex fly. I had the fly out today and I'm confused. The side that I think would face the bad weather, it's shiny and the seams are on this side, also has pockets for holding the guyline. To me the guyline pockets should be on the inside otherwise they would fill up with rain. So which side goes towards the bad weather?

I may be wrong, but I hang mine "pocket" side down (in) and have stayed dry through heavy rain.

I have the Hennessey Hex and agree with your observation. I can only tell you that I have pitched this tarp slick side/pocket side down for over two years, and often in heavy daily rain without problem. I have the 70 D cheaper version, snake skins with the Expedition zip model, and love the tarp. I know it is considered heavy, but it is ideal for my typical climate and weather conditions. Just a couple of weeks ago in Northeast Georgia, at a Boy Scout camp, it literally rained heavily every day and night almost all days. Not a single drop in my hammock. (I was the only hanger and only one dry out of over 400 campers there.) It covers well over a foot on either end of the hammock. I hang it on its own separate ridge line with prussicks at least 18 inches to 2 feet above my hammock ridge line for ventilation. Easy to clean. No need for doors, etc. I plan to use it with the WBB that I have just ordered. If you want doors, 2qzq will add them relatively inexpensively, but I haven't gone that route.

Donna here....The shiny side is the coated side...thus the inside of the tarp. Having the coated side on the inside protects the waterproof coating from any abrasions that might happen from falling twigs and such.

EDIT: I think I'm right...someone correct me if I'm wrong! Tim isn't available to ask. But I do know...the shiny side is on the inside.

The little pockets face down. I have the cheaper version of the tarp and used it recently in the rain. Here's a video...stayed completely dry through about six hours of this (plus some lighter rain) spread over two days.

Always wondered this when I had the small tarp. It only made sense to have the pockets on the inside with the big tarp. Someone suggested seam sealing the center seam however. I guess it's not sealed already from the factory?

If mine isn't then its sewn too tightly for rain to get through.

What she said. The PU coating on the Hennessy Hex is the shiny side, which goes inside to prevent damage to it.

It should come seam taped; mine did. But, then again, mine was purchased back in 2011, so...

Haven't had a problem with mine leaking since I've owned it, and I've been in some real frog-stranglers with it.

    Hope it helps!
