Pretty good deal if you're sewing more than one or two.

I just bought a pair of what Harbor Freight calls "2 piece locking straps" on the package, but I can't find them on the site. They were on sale for $3.99. They have a hook and spring buckle on one piece then 12 feet of poly webbing and a hook on the other piece. The side with the hook had a little bigger than 1" loop in the end after I took the hook off. The opposite end has about a 3" loop. Both sewn with bar and cross stitches.

I haven't had a chance to even try my first hang yet, but I can get pics of the straps if it would help you any.

I just went to Harbor Freight today and got a set of two 1" x 12' lashing straps for $3.99. Going to cut the cambuckles off and use the existing loops. It says the working load is 330lbs...not sure what the tensile strength is, but I think they will work until I can find something better. I only weigh about 160lbs, so I'm not really that worried about them breaking on me.

Sounds about right. Maybe mine were 6.99, I think the lashing straps were sold out. These had I think a 1200lb max with a 400lb working load. I really wanted to try them out this weekend while car camping, but the campground had really poor tree placement for test hanging. Closest was probably over 25', they use them for marking out each corner of the sites. I'm about 100 heavier than you, and have every confidence they will hold up just fine. Will probably use some of that extra length for being able to hang things like packs or boots around the tree.

If I were to get my own webbing and sew my own loops, do I need to use a particular thread type?

You really should use HEAVY polyester thread. Think of why button thread is much heavier than what is used to hems and clothing seams with. Compare the thread weight used to sew your jeans or work pants with what is used to sew your shirt. IOW, stuff that your #100 or #110 needle is for.
