I just visited a Golite store, and checked out the footprints, which are 40 denier waterproof bottoms for tents.
IMO, the large one for the Wolf Creek 3 tent, at $30, would be a fine starter project for a small tarp. (Yes heavier than needed. If you compromised on size, you probably do so to save as many grams as possible.)
But still, just..... 9oz, 264g is the spec, and it felt like that to my hand. Size is 64" by 84")
Even better for some who don't want to deal with the time and challenge of sewing hems on slippery sil nylon, which is not easy for new sewists:
- Just overlap the edges of two Golite almost- rectangular footprints. Sew and seam-seal.
- Tie-outs to reinforcing fabric triangles are already there.
Summary The footprints are only $30, already hemmed, and tie-outs are already included.
I had associated footprints with heavier tents and so tougher, made of heavier material. There are likely other re-purposings possible with footprints from other UL-oriented makers. Suggestions, for this thread?
