    Gore-Tex Super Winter Sock

Hello all! Another project in the works for this winter. I still have a few things left to complete, but it's 90% done.

This is a deep winter sock made from Gore-Tex. It's sized and cut for a diagonal lay and for use with an underquilt. The bottom of the sock comes within 2 inches of the uq when your actually in the hammock. When your not in the hammock it hangs a bit loose.

Made of breathable, wind proof and water proof Gore-Tex, I had the idea to have a sock that sheds rain, ice and snow and can be used without a tarp if necessary. The seams are sealed and it will have a flap over the zippers so no rain can enter the sock. The ends will be sealed and have a drip strip to help keep water from entering down the suspension. That's the plan anyway.

There will also be a 4ft zippered vent on the opposite side if needed. I made the entry/exit fairly large so you can unzip and swing your legs out and stand up quickly. I made a "smiley" entry instead of a frown to help keep rain or snow out of the hammock when you unzip it.

Yes - I'm getting to it. It weighs 30.2 oz as of now. When it's completed it will weigh about 35 oz. I'll be more exact when it's all done. Its heavy, but hopefully bomb proof. If it does half of what I want, I'll be happy.

It takes about 2-3 minutes to install and remove, so it's not too terrible.

I've had very good luck with my Gore-Tex bivy - no condensation in all kinds of weather, so I'm hoping this will turn out as good.

I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

Very nice. Have thought about making one but still have some problems with the zipper part.

I have a Warbonnet sock and they are great item to use when it is cold and windy.

Will do, Sidewinder - as soon as it gets cold!

Thanks gunner. The zipper is the easy part. I sewed it (both sides of the zipper) to the back side of the material (zipper closed), then opened the zipper and used a razor to make a perfect cut from the front side - the razor just slides between the zipper teeth. This material doesn't shed at all, so no burning needed to catch the frays.

I think this thing will be very warm - wind won't flap it around at all. It's actually not too stiff and drapes really well.

Scott at DIY Gear Supply has Gore-Tex 2nds for less than $8 a yard. I couldn't find anything wrong with it except a very slight discoloration on the edge - you have to look hard to see it. He only has navy blue.

Awesome job LB. At 32oz it ain't bad. Especially since you don't need a tarp now.

    Gore-Tex Super Winter Sock

Just out of curiosity how well do you think that would breath through the night. We all know gore tex is as breaths or as they say. So do you think you might end up with quite a bit of frosting or condensation on the inside? Don't get me wrong I love the project and could find myself making one in the future. Just a couple of questions.
