    Hornets love my WBRR

This will seem weird. On two occasions recently, in two places far from each other, as soon as i set up my Ridgerunner, a big hornet comes along, and seems fascinated by it. The first time I had to leave the area and return. But the hornet kept coming back every ten minutes or so.

In the second case case, there were wasps nearby, but they couldn't have cared less. But the hornet was fascinated by the hammock.

I keep my hammock clean. No food ever near it.

My wife speculates that the hornet thinks it is a giant nest of the Great Hornet and the poor hornet has to come and offer allegiance.

Or just likes the smell of my feet.

Has anybody else noticed this? (hornets, not the smell of my feet)

    Re: Hornets love my WBRR

I've had problems with yellow jacket wasps that seem to take an interest in my parachute hammock. I'll hang it in the back yard for a snooze and they always seem to come around and buzz me. No food our drink just me and a book. The only thing I can think of is the that colour of my hammock is two stripes of yellow with a stripe of blue down the middle and maybe it looks like a giant wasp.

Big hornet? Like 1.5 to 2 times larger than the normal hornets and yellow jackets?

The hoverfly is usually mislabeled as a giant hornet. There are about 2000 species of it and are spectacular flyers and better hoverers. Not harm to humans, will not sting and usually attracted by some smell or food/beverage. Maybe?

Its the beginning of fall,,and the bees, yellow jackets, hornets, and sweat bees are going to bother you no matter when your out and about I find. Getting harder to sit on the front porch as I live in a woods,,and they have become bothersome at this time of the year, searching for food. Last hang,,had a few honey bees even swarming the area I was cooking in searching for a few morsels in the Hoosier Nat. Forest hang we enjoyed.

Similar thing happened to me and my son, PHE (pre-hammock era) in a state park.

A ginormous hornet crawled all over his yellow tent one evening, would not scram, even made his way inside. Maybe it was the color, or maybe we were camped in his space. Not a hornet like you see in a nest, he was larger. No food in the tent, either.

Hornets are attracted to sweet substances high in sugar. These sources can be items like soda or other sweet drinks, fruit such as berries, watermelon, peaches, and flowers especially the brightly colored aromatic ones. Other items include products used by humans such as scented soaps and some perfumes. The hornet isn't stalking you he just thinks you have a field of flowers in your hair thanks to your Herbal Essence shampoo.

Might be the soap or deodorant you are using.

When I packed up one morning recently after having spent the night in a shelter with a wasps nest in the back of it, I saw one wasp drousily hugging my webbing straps, and one firmly embedded in the thin piece of what seems to be webbing material sewn around the edges of my WBBB. It was almost like they were drugged by it somehow...

I wondered about it then and wanted to post about it if anyone knew whether polyester or nylon (not sure of the material in my webbing straps) has a tendency to make wasps act drunk.. or 'in love'...
