    hello from nc

I have been stalking the forum for a year or so and wanting to try out hammock camping for a while now. I finally got a chance this weekend. A couple of years ago some one gave me a byer traveler hammock and I bought the 12' gear guide tarp for coverage. The rest of my gear was my regular ground camping stuff. Marmot 40° syn bag, Big Agnes inflatable mummy pad.

When backpacking I will forever be a hammocker. Now the quest begins to lighten my pack while remaining on a budget. A new hammock and down under quilt are top priority.

Suggestions are welcome. 3 season camping with the Walmart down mummy as a top quilt.

The ENO brand hammock as well as the generic (PLUQ) Poncho Liner Under Quilt seem to be the norm for the budget conscious.

Welcome to the forums. I used a Big Agnes pad and sleeping back for a long time - it does work, but you'll find an uq to be much superior. Check out the venders area - lots of great uq's and tq's available.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

Thanks for the warm response. I've been looking through a bunch of the stickies in different areas of the forums. One thing that I have yet to find is a first hand comparison between a double layer hammock and pad set up vs a single layer and under quilt. Has any one tried both? I'm looking at the simply light designs tree runner DL and it seems like a simple solution to a complex problem.

    Straight out of Clayton.

Most physical hike: Grandfather Mountain, NC. Aug 13.

I don't need to make my pack lighter. I need to make my (_*_) lighter.

Over the weekend it was cool enough (predicted 57°) so I did a one nighter. I had my DIY DL hammock and a 1/8" Insulite pad from Lawson. Note here there was no breeze at all until ~2AM. I was comfortable with just my feet covered 'til the breeze came up - then my shoulders were cold. Had my insultex UQ ready to rig so added it. Very comfortable without the TQ pulled up until 5AM - more breeze - pulled up the TQ. Thermometer read 55° at 5AM.

Three things to note. First, I will bring the pad with the add-on 6" shoulder extension the next time - it probably would have been enough by itself. Second, I will cut a small diagonal piece off the foot end of the pad so it will tuck up to the side if the hammock - to help it lay flatter. Third, now that I have the suspension for the IX UQ wired, I am good with it alone down to 40° - don't know if the combo would go significantly lower or not.

From now on if the temp isn't going much below 60° I will only carry the pad (6.5 oz) with the shoulder extensions and leave the 16 oz IX UQ at home.
