I will be adding demos back on the event schedule. Dutch said everyone has pretty much agreed to make the journey and do the same demos as volunteered at Blue Ridge. Yeah!

You might want to post another independent thread about your trip. May get attention from people who were not planning to attend the MAHHA, but have wanted to do a bike trip. You can add your bike trip to the spreadsheet and do the thread looking for other people. This might help.

Hiking into and in Watoga State Park

Watoga is a big park - 10,000+ acres. It's bigger than the adjacent Calvin Price State Forest. The two areas taken together are bigger than the Dolly Sods Wilderness. There are many wonderful trails in the park, so it may not be necessary to use the Allegheny Trail to hike into it. More on that later.

There are two brochures I like that aren't online (yet), a park map with trail descriptions and a detailed brochure on the Brooks Arboretum trails.

Here is a detail from the park map, with the Riverside Campground and the Arboretum circled in green. I also highlighted a loop hike from the campground that's nice. See the trail description for Jesse's Cove Trail for notes on this loop.

The Arboretum is one of my favorite places to hike, and the trailheads are on the road to the pavilion. Note - these are interesting trails with steep sections and stream crossings. I shared one of the ridge sections of the Honeybee Trail with two bears once - one ahead of me and one behind me. It is possible to bushwhack down to the creek trail fairly quickly if one is careful.

The highest part of the Arboretum is quite close to Workman Ridge, near where the Jesse's Cove Trail starts, so it's possible to combine loops.

It's difficult to find detailed information on the Allegheny Trail on the web. I'm going to consult a friend's guidebook next week to get info on a hike in from the south via Middle Mountain. Using the Allegheny Trail gets you to Watoga near Chicken House Road. From there it's at least another 6 miles via park trails to the campground.

Another hike in, with considerably easier walking could be done on the Greenbrier River Trail. The Burnside section is one of the most beautiful parts in the southern half of the trail.

Oh, yeah. Watoga is about 12 miles from the Cranberry Wilderness.

    Allegheny Trail

The Allegheny Trail(330 miles long) looks like it goes right through the middle of the park. Section 2 (90 miles long) of the Allegheny Trail starts at Blackwater Falls State park and ends in Cass near the scenic railroad.

Maybe hike-in Watoga from Blackwater Falls, and/or hike-out from Watoga to Cass. Not 100% sure on milage....still trying to find a map of Section 2 of the trail.

    Anyone interested???? Two Tents???

    Re: WV>Watoga State Park>Oct. 18-20>New 2013 Fall MAHHA!!!

Not sure if we will be able to make this event as it will be a rather long drive for us on friday, and a one day stay is out of the question. But its ultimately not up too me to make the final decision, its the bosses!

    Kim,
Cass is north of Watoga on the Allegheny Trail. You want section 3. When I get hold of a trail guide I'll post some more.

I like refried beans. That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good and we're just wasting time. You don't have to fry them again after all.
