Hey everyone, don't forget to update the spreadsheet if your plans or the number of people coming has changed since you first posted.

Still a month out and we have a good number of people signed up!

    Volunteer trail work

The Monongaseneka Trail needs a bit of brush cut back in a few spots and there are a couple of small blowdowns to move off the trail. Three or four people could do this in a morning or it could be done piecemeal by people using the trail as part of a day-hike loop. I took a walk up there the other day to see if it's a trail that would be hard to follow if the ground had a lot of leaves already down, but it's well marked and the level tread is dug into the hillside or built up with stone on the downhill side. There will be beautiful views the whole way when the leaves start to come down.

The park guide says the trail is 2.5 miles. My gps says 1.8 miles. About 90% of it is clear. There's a short stretch of weeds under a power line that crosses the trail, but most of the clipping will be small mountain laurel branches along the sides. The blowdown pictured is the biggest of several there. I'll have a folding buck saw. That and hand clippers should be all the tools needed (no loppers). Park Supt. Mark Wylie said he can supply clippers if we need them, but it doesn't look like we'll need a large work crew with a lot of tools. (It'll be a walk in the park. ) I haven't looked at the Arboretum trails or any of the others across the road, and the derecho reportedly did more damage in that vicinity, but there was an Americorps crew that was here this summer, so they're probably okay.

If you're interested, please indicate which day on the spread sheet.

    I have off from work!
I'm starting to plan my trip there. I love the Greenbrier River Trail to bike & camp along. I may get on the trail and camp along it on Friday. Then bike into Watoga for Saturday afternoon & stay there overnight.

Great! Mark, are you bringing a canoe? Maybe I can find a rental nearby. The park's fleet of paddleboats and one canoe stops renting the 1st of October. I saw people catching big fish out in the middle while I was getting small fry near the dam. They stock Watoga Lake in the Spring.

We don't have a canoe. I'll have to ask him what he's planning to do. He usually fishes trout streams that are stocked. I'll let you know.
