Sewn or Snap Close Footbox

It looks like many TQ's are offered with either a sewn or snap closure footbox. I can see the sewn version being warmer, and the snap closure being more versatile (unsnap in warmer weather or on the ground). Can a sewn footbox be awkward with varying body positions? Is there any draft that can be felt with the snap closure? Trying to decide which version I want to go with.

I had trouble with my first set of snaps on a DIY TQ - I used too gentle a set of snaps. The first sign of my toes getting near the bottom of the quilt (like when I pulled it up under my chin and around my ears ) would pop open the snaps. I replaced them with a more robust set of snaps and it solved the problem!

I liked the snaps for exactly the reason you gave - versatility!

Course I also made mine with a squared off footbox because I know how I sleep and that rounded thing would have driven me nuts..

Snaps versus sewn, personally I use a snap foot box on my personal 20* TQs and up. For my 0* TQ I prefer sewn since it will be used in COLD weather. As for drafts in a snap foot box the mechanics of cinching the foot box closed can leave a small gap, size of a dime. We recently started shipping TQs with a stronger cord lock and it seems to keep the foot box cinched tighter. Lots of folks just stick a sock in the small gap for colder weather. Most temps over 35-40* and your not going to notice any draft. I personally don't notice it at colder temps but everyone is a little different. The sewn foot box is just that sewn, no setup options. The snap box you have options from full blanket mode, to partial foot box venting the feet, to fully closed foot box. It is a more versatile option.

On my last DIY TQ. I put 16oz of 850 down in it and did a square sewn footbox.

Really happy with its performance. So far I have seen temps down to 20F with high winds and this thing kept me toasty. With this much down in it, it only made since to do a sewn footbox.

I have two quilts I use as topquilts. One has a sewn footbox and I like it a lot.
The other velcros together, and - even with the ties where the velcro stops tied - I can easily kick the velcro apart. I have wiggly feet.

I have both and prefer the sewn. I found the snaps on one of my UQ's kept coming undone plus I can't ever see myself using it as a blanket.

I have a JRB 20" No Sviveller top quilt, the one that has the head hole in the middle and can be worn as a camp jacket. In this case it's nice that the foot box can be undone. However, the vcro does tend to pull apart when sleeping in foot box mode. A sewn type will also probably save an ounce.

My Prodigy has snaps, and the DIY I'm making will have them as well. It allows one to open the TQ and use it as an Underquilt.
