That was quite the night. What a great story to tell. I didn't expect it was real.

Here comes his side of the story since you have already heard mine.

When I talked to him this morning about it he said they coyotes woke him up and he heard something brushing lightly on the away from camp side of his hammock and then some soft clumping in the dirt right next to him. Very quietly he pulled back the poncho liner only to find his face inches from the side of a buffalo. He did exactly what we had talked about in our environmental (including animals we might encounter) safety discussion. He froze calmed himself down and waited to see what the animal might do next while he determined his best option and how to apply the rule of thumb (the rule of thumb is if you hold your thumb on a fully extend arm if it doesn't cover the problem completely then you are TOO CLOSE). After a few moments it moved a few feet away giving him a reasonable route of escape. He quietly sneaked out of his hammock and down to me in the middle of the camp.

He did AWESOME. I on the other hand should have been more cautious looking back. Chalk one more up for my overworked guardian angels. I think I'll give them tomorrow o........then again......I might need them......

I am just glad there wasn't a head butting contest with the beast.

Anyway lesson learned. For next time I will be a little slower to dismiss my kids tall tails (sic, pun intended).

As for monsters under the bed I will go armed for battle.

    "Are the coyotes scaring you?
No! there just noisy. It's the buffalo that is bothering me."

I have shared this story with a dozen people and all are amazed and impressed by your son's handling of the situation.

One of the all time great hammock stories, no doubt.
