    ENO's...beginner hammocks????

I really enjoy my ENO hammocks (especially my doublenest this year) and in numerous summer, fall and spring backpacking trips (40+) have found them to be high-quality and reasonable weight (16-20 oz).

I do replace the ENO suspension w/whoopie's BUT I have heard various people mention they are beginner hammocks??? Why? because they are easily available in various retail stores, the basic suspension, no advanced features, etc?

Anyway just kinda wondering what makes a "non-beginner" hammock?

I don't view them as beginner's hammocks, and in point of fact, am unsure what a beginner's hammock is. I've been at this long enough that, at last, I no longer think of myself as a beginner, and I sleep in an ENO every night.

Their wide availability does make them a gateway drug, however.

I have other hammocks but the ENO that I still own was my first.
    Straight out of Clayton.

Most physical hike: Grandfather Mountain, NC. Aug 13.

I don't need to make my pack lighter. I need to make my (_*_) lighter.

maybe because they are easily available and at a lot of stores as well. Most see these before they find out about all the others.

One thing I've learned since joining here, don't put much stock in the phrase "beginner hammock". It doesn't really mean anything other than "I think that hammock is inferior to mine". Of all of the hammocks I have made or seen, any one of them could be quickly and easily modified to be taken camping or hiking on the long-term.

I agree with Oldgringo, I think it is a gateway hammock rather than a beginner hammock.

ENO is like the walmart of hammocks, they're everywhere.

As a relative beginner, that's exactly how I view ENO hammocks, as a beginner hammock. Beginner does not mean an inferior product, but it does mean to me the mass produced and easy to find at a retailer.

If I knew nothing about hammocks and went into Blue Ridge Mountain Sport (the local outfitter) or the Richmond REI to check them out, my only choice in store would be ENO. And what about hammock guidance from the clerk? I would bet that all they know about is ENO as well. If you go to the websites of most retailers the options are dominated by ENO.

The only reason I didnt start out with ENO is because I knew of hammocks, the cottage makers and this forum before I knew I wanted a hammock.

I started in a string hammock. I bought it as a favor from a guy trying to raise money for a worthwhile project. I paid less than $5 for it. I tried to use it to death but it will not die. I thought it was a beginner hammock. Inexpensive no frills etc... When I started to look for more of them for my family a couple of years ago I regrettably could not find anything like it. After over a decade of heavy use I finally cut through a string on accident. The cut does not compromise the utility of the thing and the repair is simple. It still hasn't quit its service.

Normal retail routes took me to Hennessy and ENO. When my search finally led me to this forum. Lots of hammockers were using them. Probably because there are lots to be found easily. Hennessy has the same going for them. I have laid in one but never slept in one. There are plenty of other options around to be had and to the person just starting out the one they start with is more likely to be considered a beginning hammock.

In my opinion its all in the opinion of the user. Having spent a bunch of time around this site I have formed a new opinion that my under $5 gift is still one of the most advanced products I have tried. One day I will wear it out to the point of it being no longer useful then I will be forced to reverse engineer it into multiple clones, with a few miner mods I have come to enjoy along the way.
