Ma/NY Border, Date "Winter", Taconic Crest Trail

So I have been toying with the idea that this winter will be the winter that I finialy attempt the Taconic Crest Trail thru hike of around 36 miles.

It does not seem like a long trail but rest asured that its not with out its difficulities and in the winter its even more chalinging.

I wanted to get an idea of how many others would like to take a few days and hike it with me.

I would prefer to have snow on the ground and in the Mtns that the trail runs so I dont have a date set yet as I dont know when its going to snow and stay for a good ammount of time.

In order to be able to get the special patch for the winter hike of the trail we need to have a minimum of 3 people but the more the better as we will be breaking about 75% or more of the trail as we go.

I have hiked most of the trail in good weather but there is still one section that I have not done so I do not know anything about it.

It could take up to 4 days to compleat end to end and the kicker is that there is no parking on eithor end to leave your car at. If there is enough intrest I will talk to local home owners and see if we can park cars on there property just so we can get home at the end of the trail.

If you would like to try it or are intrested in this hike please let me know.

Interesting, I've never heard of the Taconic Trail. I am interested, I can't commit right now, but I will keep an eye on this thread.

Interested too, but date dependent. Would need to coincide with school holidays for me to get 4 days plus travel.

Since there is some good interest, maybe we should start talking about some Dates for this trip.

I will work on the GPX file for you all to look at. I only have 3/4 of the trail mapped via GPS so please excuse the gap that you will see.

If this does happen, I will have the paperwork ready before hand so you can get the special patch for the winter hike, or I will try and get some that I can hand out at the end.

There are plenty of trails that will get you off the trail and back to main roads if you need to end the hike before we get to the end. I will have them all listed as well. Just give me a few days to get it ready for everyone.

As for me I would like to do this in January or February since there is plenty of time to make arrangements and test gear before we hike.

I would like to see what dates in those 2 months (ie... Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon.) work best for a majority of those interested in this.

The Taconic Crest Trail (TCT) is one of a few nice trails in this neck of the woods! Out in the Berkshires you'll also find the South Taconic Trail (STT), a hunk of the AT and a slew of other trails with lower miles. I'm not usually a trail guy (more into bushwacking), but since I'm in the planning/conditioning phase for an AT Thru next year and a NOOB hanger, I'll keep an eye on this. too. Thanks for putting it up!

I'm good for 2014. I have no vacation time left for this year, I reset on 1/1/14. So I will be open, now I'll just need some good winter hear by then.
