    Tree Huggers / hanging straps

Hey all, I am curious re: Tree Huggers. Are they all that and a bag of chips? Or will 1 1/2" Nylon made myself do the same thing. Keep in mind money is never a consideration when it comes to toys. thanks

Nylon tends to stretch. If you are just using the nylon for huggers so the span is fairly short it shouldn't be a problem. But if you try to hang from nylon straps you may find yourself slowly sinking to the ground by morning. Nylon has a good memory as well so they donb't really stretch out over time. They will to some degree but not like you might want.

For suspension straps you would be better off with polyester or polypro. I have used the polypro myself cause it is cheaper but if money is not an issue....
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Tree huggers should be required with every hammock for tree hanging. They do less damage to the trees than ropes. Polyester tree straps/huggers are the way to go.

I once saw some dink screw eye bolts into two trees to hang. What a putz. I'll make my own tree friendly ones.

    ok, so nylon......bad and polypro / polyester....good
the straps that I've seen for sale, I think eno slapstraps, look pretty good but arent they nylon???? I like their design, looks really simple. Where can I find polypro to make these straps and, big question here, can this stuff be sewn with a normal sewing machine????

The Speers sell it. I also buy the polyester from Strapworks (they sell polypro too) and the stuff from OWF is great.

Pretty easy to sew with a heavy needle and patience.

I don't care for the slap strap concept simply because they have preset hanging points. That means you can not be assured of the same amount of sag each time you set up unless you always set up in the same place. For backyard/stand hanging that's possible but for camping I find that unrealistic. My preference is the ring buckle system but what ever floats your boat.

I've seen the slap straps sold in specialty backpacking stores. As far as sewing your own straps, no special equipment is required but it would be best to familiarize yourself with the double box or multiple bartack patterns so your loops are good and strong.

www.strapworks.com is a common source for webbing and sling straps for many folks here. Lots of people like the seatbelt polyester simple slings because the loops come already sewn for a reasonable price.

Webbing from big box stores are not recommended as the quality tends to be light duty and not up to the demands of hanging. YMMV.

it just dawned on me what you mean by pre set loops and their not being where you need them!! they just looked real handy but trees tend to grow wherever they please. What is the "ring buckle" system???
I just checked out outdoor wildnerness for their webbing and got totally confused. Which webbing??? soft link, heavy link, tight weave??? how wide? can I use 1" ??? and how many feet do I need to buy?
