I have a couple of quilts but sometimes someone else is using some of my gear and I use a sleeping bag. If I zip the foot end up to about my knees, and use the rest and leave the rest unzipped it is the same to me as using a quilt. I just tuck the sides down around my body. If its cold I stick a sit pad piece of foam in the footbox sometimes so it moves with my feet. Can't imagine totally zipping myself up in my sleeping bag in a hammock, I'd probably kill myself trying to get arranged .

I use a kelty cosmic down 20 and just leave it unzipped and use as a top quilt, though I do pull it around so the top is covering me rather then the seam. I like it because in warmer nights, I can drape the sides over the edge of my hammock and get lot's of airflow but still have a cover. I have no experience with top quilts as of yet but that system works well for me.

Sleeping bags.. Love them or hate them

I've hated sleeping bags and zippers long before I got a hammock, which was three months ago. Wish I had discovered top quilts years ago.

I like sleeping bags. I put my whoopie thru the foot end and pull the bag over me, close the head end draw string. Done. Sorta a peapod but easily found at the camping store.

I didn't mind sleeping bags until I used a top quilt.

It's a loaded question with too many variables. Under ideal conditions we would all have an unlimited budget with infinite storage so we could all have the best piece of equipment for any given trip. Reality seems to fall far short of that for most of us. Bags work. So do quilts. We use what we have available at the time.
    YMMV

    Said it before.

A sleeping bag can be used like a quilt.

A quilt can not be used like a bag.

    I'm a bag man.

I have never cared for sleeping bags because they restrict my movement. Up until earlier this year all my equipment was geared for ground camping. Since quality quilts are expensive we am not able to simply replace all that sleeping gear.

We zip up the sleeping bag bottom to create a footbox, use safety pin to anchor the zip pull to the bag and apply a generous piece of duct tape over the zipper pull/safety pin.

I've used our TQs and UQs on the ground in place of sleeping bags with 100% success.

I've never used a quilt, but I like the "nestiness" of a sleeping bag, and as others have said, if you're too warm, you can just unzip it until you feel comfy. I'm a very cold sleeper and like to block all the drafts I can.
