We (Me, My husband, Our daughter and her boyfriend) had a chance to spend about 10 days in Yosemite National Park in August. It was amazing. The highlight of our trip was our overnight hike to Ostrander Lake. It is a little over 6 miles from the trail head.
Took about an hour and half to hike the first 3 miles with a small elevation gain. However, the last 3 are a killer with a 1400 foot elevation gain. Ostrander Lake is one of those pretty, granite-wrapped mountain lakes that are typical of the High Sierra. On the first half of the hike we passed through meadows and streams, and saw lots of wildflowers and big trees.
On the second part of the trail, is high clearing that opens up to views of the back of Half Dome and beautiful mountain peaks. However with a 1400 foot elevation gain you cannot appreciate any of the views because you are in survivor mood. Try to make it before dark and not be found dead on the trail.
The last half mile is down hill, and when you catch first sight of the lake it makes it all worth while. Crystal clear water, high granite white mountains surround the lake. Neat little ski hut built in 1941 for cross country skiers.
We had no problem finding trees to hang our hammocks. We did have to use extra long tree straps. The trees are just a little bigger out there than in Alabama. Set up camp, explored the area, met some really nice people who were also camping. We were the only hangers.
The weather was perfect. Dropped to a cool 42 degrees that night. We were prepared for cool weather, but was a little surprised that it got down to 42. Highs during the day was about 82. Being from Alabama having no humidity was wonderful. My husband did not even put up his tarp.
When the sun set and the stars came out we were treated to a meter shower that was out of this world. Apparently we timed our trip with a meter event that produced something like 60 shooting stars an hour. It was crazy to be in the wilderness hangin and watching something like that. How lucky can a person get.
Hiking out was fast and easy. Got to enjoy all the vistas hiking out. Our daughter got engaged while we were at Ostrander. Not every girl can say that. It was a wonderful adventure.
