Having a heavy object in the hammock with you

Ok, I'm going to try and go about this a different manner.

In my hammock I have a couple of pockets sewn in around my head. They're great for your car keys or cell phone but when something heavy is put in it hangs down on my head. I like to carry a heavy item (21 oz.) while camping but it always hits my head while sleeping. Really annoying! I also don't want the item loose in my hammock, not comfortable to lie on. So I was wondering what others do with their heavy items while hammocking?

Sew a pocket along the edge, near your hips (like an ENO hammock has). Take some extra line and make a ridge line & hang a pouch from it. Make a small bag, with a draw string, and hang it from the gathered end above your head. Lots of different ways to keep it close.

Id look for some kind of holder for it that you could either hang from a ridge line or hang at one end up in a peak bag. Basically pass a loop over your suspension and tuck it in through the gathered end, and a bag can be clipped up in the head or foot end.

Hang it on the ridge line (if you have one) would be my go-to solution. On my last trip I had a pouch with a number of items - not heavy in themselves, but the pouch was - and it was within easy reach right above me.

My heavy items reside either in the edge in the middle of the hammock, or held on the ridge line tied in place so they don't slide around unnecessarily. That way I can get them quick and easy and I know exactly where to reach them. I have also tied them into the suspension above my head so they don't hang down to far into the hammock. Still easy to reach but not where it whacks my head.

As mentioned, a ridgeline bag of some kind is good. Mountain Goat makes one that is basically a double ended stuff sack made of no see-um netting which is good for being able to reach in from the side as opposed to reaching in from the top. Not familiar with the Lawson hammock so I don't know how easy it is to put on a ridgeline.

I'm contemplating installing a Velcro patch that can accept and hold some ballistic nylon, real heavy and formed stuff. Until then I have a great Ridgeline bag made of rip stop that seems to do the trick and keep my head clear.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the strength to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

For holding something that heavy, I'd put it up on a ridgeline, but it would need to be a little higher than mine normally is. If it's something you anticipate needing to retrieve (draw?) quickly, just make a tube that's about double the diameter of the object in your hand and run the ridgeline through it, then place the thing you need in there. You can slide the tube fore and aft as needed so that you can naturally find it in the dark without grasping around.

I put a lot of stuff in my ridge line mesh bag. Or in my pack on the ground near me.

Judging by your profile info, you own a Lawson.

I would suggest a storage pocket to the side area (near your hips). Heavier items will sag the netting area, unless you apply some kind of tensioning device to accommodate the added load. Shock cord or similar may be needed.
That being said, possibly tensioning the pocket area you already have back to the main suspension area would eliminate the droopy pocket syndrome. Stitch some small loops to the outside of the hammock and then add some shockcord?

Lawson's have a limited following on this forum. So what works on a gathered end hammock may not be the ticket for you.
