Down sticking out of UQ! Panic!

I have a really nice full length UQ that I have only used twice. I leave it stored hanging out of the stuff sack. I was checking it out yesterday and noticed that there are 6-7 down feathers coming out of it in random spots (not seams). I wouldn't be concerned if it was just the butt of the quill, but some are almost all the way out.

What can I do to stop my UQ from becoming a giant waste of money? Now I'm nervous to pack it and use it. Is this a normal thing? Anyway to stop it? Thanks guys!

This is normal. Even with "down proof" fabric, you'll get some leakage.

Most people, including the cottage manufacturers, have some percentage of over stuff to account for this and maintain temp rating over a long period of time.

If it was a DIY, then what type of fabric did you use and did it state it was downproof? If it was purchased then I'd get in touch with the manufacturer.

For what it's worth, I've had several down bags and have DIY'd both a top and a bottom quilt and I rarely get feathers poking through, not to mention six at one time.

Down sticking out of UQ! Panic!

I purchased it, I have emailed them. I expected that some wpuld eventually come out, but I have literally only used it twice, and I am very particular about taking care of my gear (especially the expensive stuff). I just wanted to know how normal this was.

I am assuming that pulling the ones that are sticking out would just be an invite to the rest of the down to come out and party. Tape maybe? Or maybe the vendor had a bad run on cloth.

Like others have said, it happens. I was told by Brandon at Warbonnet to pull it back through from the other side, then lick your finger and rub the spot it popped through.

Some leakage is fairly normal. If at all possible, pull the down back into the quilt and massage the fabric to heal the hole. Some of it also depends on the quality of the down. Feathers tend to poke thru more than the down cluster. Even with good fabric and good down, I'll still a little "down dust" floating in the air when fluffing a quilt just before use.

I've had a few escape but never 6 or 7 at the same time, maybe one every few months or so. I often wake up with the little tiny downy feathers stuck to my base layers. I think I once heard that you should expect it with a new bag/quilt, even from the bigger manufacturers, maybe you're still going through that bedding in stage?

Sometimes you can push them back in, especially if you catch them early enough. But if they're being stubborn I just pull them out gently, almost crying when the long ones come out lol.

I once had a secondhand DIY TQ which was stuffed with a recycled British army arctic bag, the poor quality feathers mixed in with the good down were always poking out, even spiking me as I slept. I was glad to get rid of that one.

Down sticking out of UQ! Panic!

Ok cool. Just had a little heart attack about it, but if it is relatively normal I'll back away from the ledge

It's just tough seeing, kinda like noticing that your brand new tires need to be rotated I suppose. Thanks for the lowered blood pressure everyone

These fabrics are down proof, not feather proof. Those fine sharp feather spikes will poke through our lightweight fabrics

It's nigh on impossible to have no feathers in down, leakage will always happen.
