    name that snake

Took my girlfriend on a dayhike to see Sougahoagdee Falls this weekend. As we walked around the bluff behind the falls I was looking at the rock and thinking, wow, neat colors and patterns ... hey that kinda looks like .... SNAKE! ... we backed away quickly, but what we saw looked like a huge copperhead and it had been about a foot from my face

I calmed down and took a picture, but left the snake all alone behind the falls. I noted that the head looked small and rounded, not at all like most copperheads I've seen.

Take a look at the attached picture and tell me what you think. If you look close, I think you'll agree, it's actually TWO Northern Watersnakes.

It is indeed a Copperhead. I use to raise snakes of all kinds for selling to pet stores etc. You were dead on.

Yes, that IS a copperhead. The patterns on the back tell the tale. Hourglass shaped, narrow on the top of the back and getting wider down the sides.

It looks more like a copperhead than a northern watersnake.

I don't know, the pattern looks right, but the head just didn't look like other copperheads I've seen. It was rounded and small. Plus it was up behind the waterfall in the coldest, darkest, wettest possible spot, about 6 foot up on the rocks.

If you look close though, I am pretty sure it's two of them, whatever they are.

Hetairoi, I remember a conversation we had when we were leaving the falls area about how often water snakes are accused of being water moccasins. Some people use the test that if the snake is near the water and is longer than it is wide that it must surely be venomous. I'm glad you didn't get into trouble concluding a non-venomous identification. That rounded head would have steered me in the same direction as you. Rounded pupils are my next test, but it would not have been good to get that close. DTE

I like that test. I think I will follow that from now on.
