Fitting Tarp in Snake Skins in Pack

I just picked up a set of snake skins and love the way they simplify packing up the tarp, but wondering if there are any trick to stuffing them in a pack. They seem just stiff enough that they take up a lot more room in my pack than the same tarp used when in a simple stuff sack. Any hints you can share or suggestions on what I might be doing wrong? They seem simple enough to use, but I can't believe they should be that much bulkier than a stuff sack or bishop's bag.

Attach it to the outside of the pack, either with a bit of cordage or in an external pocket. It's what I did when I had a standard-style internal frame. That way, the tarp is easy to get to, doesn't take up extra room in the pack, won't get the rest of your gear wet, and will dry as much as possible between set-ups.

    Hope it helps!

Rolled or coiled? Stuff into pack nooks and crannies, gaps between other items? Maybe a larger set so as not to be so tight and inflexible?

I agree, it makes it simple for sure. I put tarp, in skins, in an outside pocket of pack for all of the reasons listed above. Experiment, you will find a way that works for you!

I take my tarp in skins and fold it accordion style and stuff in my small tarp stuff sack. Fits the same as no skins.

I was wondering about this as well. My snake skins will be here tomorrow, so I will see if I can think of something.

I really like the idea of having it strapped to the outside of the pack. I will definitely be trying to make that the first option. I love trying to modify my system. Thanks for the idea.

    Same same...Shug.
Works great for silnylon in skins that are wide enough.
Cuben is very stiff in skins and does not want to accordion fold so well...perhaps I need wider skins for cuben?

Thank you for the quick responses. Looks like I may need to look at strapping it to the outside of my pack. For summer, late spring and early fall, I use a GG Kumo, so not a lot of extra space. Could grab a larger pack, but suggestions about putting it outside make a lot of sense. Think I'll try that and may also try coiling it inside again, but did not have much success with that when I tried the last time.

Thank you again for all of the suggestions. I've go a trip scheduled for next week so will see how it goes.

I fold accordion style then use the cordage to wrap the package tight. This goes in the outer compartment of the ULA for quick deployment when arriving in camp during a rain. That tight package can get rather small if you work at it.
