It's already too late.
I've heard a talk by a professor who wrote an article for Encyclopedia Britannica several years back. After that experience he realized that Wikipedia is as good (and sometimes better) than any set of Encyclopedias.

So any new findings on the origins of the term "whoopie sling"?
Might find it in an old sailing or aborests book..
one of my professors likes to give people a research topic that he created a wiki page for. of course his wiki is completely false with false references. It amuses him when half the class fails the assignment and doesn't understand why.
My sincere apologies to the OP and everyone else for completely derailing this thread.
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )
Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

A whoopie sling is one of the easiest things to make. ... It was invented in China in 1893 by a guy named Whu Pe. Phil Share. Share this post on; Digg;
It's on the internet so it has to be true.
Google books found me a reference to whoopie slings in Tree Care Industry Vol 11 from 2000.
