    It finally happened

I've been hanging in our troop for about 2 years and finally "infected" a couple of scouts.

After summer camp, our Scoutmaster's youngest talked his parents into replacing his bed with a hammock. This same scout is going to try hammock camping this weekend along with my son.

In the famous words of Shug, "WOOOO BUDDY!"

The scoutmaster's son talked him into replacing the bed at home, full time, with a hammock? Nice!

the infection is spreading in my troop as well
I used my hammock at several camps last year - and in the summer at a jamboree - My son has his as well -
2 leaders have purchased hammocks for this weekend camp - another was going to buy one but none in stock also have a few scouts that look like they want to try hanging.

I figure by our 2014 canoe trip most of the youth ( and leaders ) will be in hammocks

Yep. His mom had a hand in this as dad (the Scoutmaster) was at the National Jambo with his oldest.

Ya, summer camp we had 3 of the older boys buy cheap cotton "lounging" hammocks from the Trading Post and I helped them set those up.

It's catching on in our troop as well. Started last spring with one of our adults leaders and his son (with heavy influence from SMJerry). Spread to my son in anticipation of our upcoming week long back trip in the summer. I tested his one night and was sold. So on the summer trip of 6 scouts and 3 adults - we had 5 hammocks! Will be fun to watch it spread further this next year!

I introduced hammock camping to my old troop several years ago. SM and ASM caught the bug then a few kids. They recently did a hike on the AT. Only one person tented. The rest did hammocks. I got this bug in 07 when I met Tom Hennessy at world jambo. I think its a good thing but also I think kids should learn sharing a tent once in a while in case they gotta go to the ground. It's hard to find a place to hang in the middle of the field at a camporee unless you plan for making a system to hang from.

    Re: It finally happened

Fairly successful. Scoutmaster's son stayed toasty warm with pads, my son got a little cool until he realized the UQ needed some adjustments and I sleep good enough.

Now the Scoutmaster & another Asst Scoutmaster started talking about possibly using hammocks as a lower cost alternative to get our boys backpacking.

If that happens, I guess I'll be hanging out (pun intended) in the DIY section more, hehe
