Undercover/Quilt protector

Another DIY project that i'm quite pleased with. In my indoor hang area i've used a torso length UQ as with a window unit & ceiling fan running it gets cool at night! I scrapped an old single layer 1.1 diy hammock and made an undercover from it. The suspension is similar to an UQ, side & end channels with shock cord BUT the drawcord pulls are in the center of the long sides NOT the ends. Last night i used the undercover on my HH Expediton and added a space blanket between the undercover & hammock body..No UQ. I did not cinch up the udercover tightly so the space blanket was not pressed against the bottom of the hammock. This setup was AS WARM as using my 2.1 apex torso length UQ and WITHOUT condensation! I'm quite pleased with it so far. Hennessy shows a space blanket being used as part of the supershelter insulation system in one of his videos..he's right one with how useful they are in my opinion. Again the pictures are not great...more to come from outdoors as i'll be testing this setup a good bit more.

I like it, I am getting ready to make a UQ protector this weekend. If you get a chance can you take some more pics of it off the hammock laid out flat?

Yep, the space blanket/undercover combo works pretty well. I've been doing that for about a year now, using my poncho as an undercover when I get to camp. For me, that's good down to ~50* comfortably. For most folks, I'd recommend 55* to 60* or so (I'm an human space heater).

It sure saves on weight, and makes smaller tarps much easier to use in foul weather.

Thanks FL..gonna make a second one now that i have a good pattern to work from. I think the Undercover W/O the space blanket would be great for blocking mosquitoes from biting thru the bottom of the hammock as well during summer? Cheers

If you have a good seal at the ends, yes, the undercover works just fine to block mosquitoes. Depending on the altitude that you tend to hang at, it may or may not be too warm for your comfort, though. I find that, down here, I really don't want anything between me and the outside air above 75* (which is the constant between about March and October down here).

Undercover may work well to block mosquitoes by itself, but if you are worried about weight, etc, just spray the bottom of you hammock with Permethrin. Up here in New England the mosquitoes carry west nile and EEE. I spray everything to avoid that and Lyme disease from the ticks!

Nice project. I ordered a UQ protector or wind shield from 2QZQ some time back.. have had it on my HH.. think I may be putting it on my WBBB this winter to protect and increase r factor with my HG UQ.
