    Rain/rain-fly question

I was just up in the Boundary Waters for a few days and got caught in a lengthy afternoon of hard, endless drizzle.
Pretty soon after it set in, there was as much rain UNDERNEATH my rain-fly as there was on top of it.
Then, this covered and totally infiltrated my weather shield on the hammock and proceeded to saturate the inside of the hammock and my top quilt.
So, I just invested about 700 dollars on something that leaks like a sieve?
    What am I missing?

You were using a Clark setup?

Can you give specifics (or a picture)?

I just made a large ('Winter') tarp because I worry about hard rain and smaller tarps, so I'm interested in your experience - which sounds miserable.

    Absolutely.
The brand new hammock and rain fly as supplied by Clark.
I don't know what good any pictures would do. Just like you see on their web site and photos all over this one.
I've seen post after post about how guys would be on outings with their friends, who, after a rain and sleeping in tents, would be wet and miserable.
But, the guy in the Clark would be high and dry!
Well, if I had been in my hammock during the time I mentioned, I would be as wet and miserable as any time I ever have been.
    My set-up was soaked.
    Their suspension lines are worthless.
A week after I ordered mine, they put them on sale and could have told me about it - and didn't.
I've heard they came out with new suspension poles for the all season hammocks, but as a recent customer, I have not been informed of the upgrade.
And my rain fly leaks like a screen.

I'm starting to think I got soaked - by Clark.

Sounds like the tarp needs seam sealing. Was it leaking from the tarp ridge line? Not sure if their tarps come seam sealed but I would start there. They do sell drip rings for suspension or just use a shoelace.....http://www.junglehammock.com/product...um-drip-rings/
Carry forth and best of luck. I feel for ya'.

I can't imagine any reason for the underside of the tarp getting that wet unless the tarp was not made of the right material. Could it be that somehow Clark got hold of some fabric that was not properly manufactured?
The weathershield is only 'resistant' to water and will let moisture through if enough is present. But still, moisture dripping from the tarp should have mostly run off the weathershield.
Any chance that you were sabotaged by your camping partners?
Perhaps a phone call to Clark will help.

    I was solo.
Water was not concentrated at the ridge line but evenly/equally dispersed across the underside of the rain fly.
    Time will tell.
I really need something I can depend on.

Don't know what the current Clarke setup looks like but I can thing of two reasons for rain under the tarp.

Drip rings and/or lines at the edge of the tarp to form a water break on the ridge line.

Porous Sil nylon - there seems to be a continuous thread of folks with leaky Sil. Fix the water down the ridge problem and if there is still an issue call Clarke. Sounds like you need some backyard testing time.
    YMMV

    Re: Rain/rain-fly question

I am a new NX-250 owner and very interested in finding out what happened. The Clark User Manual I have specifically states "Do not seal your rain fly unless you find a reason to do so. Seams can lose integrity from being jerked or pulled over time."

I've been in short light rain and blowing mist in fog (was actually high enough to be in the "clouds") and everything under the tarp was dry as a bone.

Please call Clark, describe what happened and let us know what you find out?

I agree with the posts above which suggest contacting Clark about your possibly defective waterproof cover.

I was just looking at the DD Jungle Hammock (similar idea to the Clark) and in their writeup, they say:

The waterproof layer can be used under the hammock allowing it to be set-up as a bivi on wet ground, or it can be clipped onto the top of the hammock to be used as a tarp.
Please note the waterproof layer doesn't sit completely flush on the top (see photos) but it will stay firmly in place when tied at the ends and provides full rain protection in light wind conditions. *It is a lightweight option to using a full tarp and doesn't provide dry cover for gear/cooking, so when camping in high winds or when you want more cover at camp we recommend taking a full size tarp with you.
So perhaps a (good-sized) tarp should be added to the Clark kit? One look told me the Clark would be wet in rainy conditions in coastal BC (Canada). I have quite wide overhangs on my house, and the fall/winter rains pelt against the windows (infamous 'horizontal rain').
Anyway, you need somewhere dry-ish to put your gear....

FWIW, I kept a clark vertex rain fly deployed from the last day of May until after thanksgiving, many rains, some very heavy, no leaks at all, nothing every came through, so you are correct to expect the same from the kit you bought. I would be on the phone with Clark and explain my situation, and expect a brand new rain fly from them. Clark doesn't need this and for sure you don't. Please let us know how Clark deals with you.
