    sealing a seam

has anyone taped their tarp seams? I know they use it on tents and am curious as to who has tried it, and how successful it was.

I was under the impression that taping coudn't be done by consumers without proper equipment and needed to be done at the factory. I'm sure some here knows better.

I remember looking into this a year ago and if I recall correctly it would have been ridiculously expensive. The only seam tape I could find was meant to be used in small quantities as a repair to previously taped seams. Maybe you found a more reasonable source?

taping seams doesn't work on silnylon from what my research tells me.
this site I put above does show how to make your own silnylon seam sealer though

I believe the taped seams in clothing use a tape that has the glue activated (melted) with either rf of high freq audio sources in a pinch roller type situation as it passes through. I could be wrong.... ;-)
    YMMV

My Exped silnylon tarp has 'something that looks like clear tape' applied to the inside of the ridgeline seam. It may just be a thick and very consistent band of sealant, though. And it seems to have a thin layer of sealant over that...
Definitely looks like an 'industrial only- not DIY' sort of thing, but it certainly seems effective and looks like it will be durable.

I find it mind-boggling that I'm expected to seal the seams on tarps myself after spending $$ to buy from a 'commercial producer' like Integral Designs (and others un-named...).

I agree. I much prefer "ready to hang" after spending the money.
