My new SLS for a tarp

Hey guys, I've recently made my new SLS for my tarp. I really like the ease of using a figure 9 but wanted to have the same adjustability without using any hardware or knots. So this is what I've come up with. I'm sure it has been done before but here it is.

    1) The fixed end is attached using a soft shackle attached via lark's head to a closed eye on 1.75 mm zing-it. This is wrapped around the tree and attached to the main line. (image 1)

    2) 2 prusik knots allow the tarp to be attached and adjusted along the ridgeline(not shown).

    3) The second attachment point is done using, in order, a soft shackle prusik attached to a UCR with a closed eye. (images 2 and 3)

I decided to go this route so that I can keep both points of attachment as close to the anchor point as possible so that I have as much possible ridgeline to work with. I have found it very easy to set up and adjust. It also seems to hold taught very well. Please let me know what you think.

Special thanks to Shug and his videos for introducing me to the concept. And Opie for his great demonstrations of the splices used here.

    Like this. Nice and simple.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

My problem with your setup is the damage you'll do to trees. You need some sort of strapping or some padding so the line won't dig into the bark. Otherwise, anywhere you use the hammock will get the rest of us banned from using our hammocks.

I think the OP originally said that he's using this setup for his tarp not his hammock.

Yes, I use this setup solely for my tarp. I use whoopies and straps for my hammock.

Whoopies don't work worth a darn for tarp ridgelines because you need three hands to get the constrictor tight enough. I would imagine UCRs are problematic as well.

I haven't found this to be a problem at all with the UCRs. I pull the main line tight with one hand and milk the bury with the other. It is extremely easy and requires virtually no effort. I'll try to find time and record a video of it. The only thing that may be somewhat challenging is looping the soft shackle through the eye and locking it. But "challenging" may be a bit of an exaggeration. A small carabiner is much easier but I was going for no hardware here.

Try explaining the difference to your 'friendly uninformed park ranger'.
I think we should avoid wrapping very thin lines around trees.

I have made a video demonstrating the setup. If you would like to see it, you can find it here. Hope it answers some of the questions.
