Home made hiking staff support pole

I have a staff I walk with that is basically a dead sapling. I was thinking about modifying the head so that it is easier to use the staff to prop up one side of my tarp. Has anyone already done this and if so what worked the best for you? I am also considering doing a cord weave on the end and leave room for a small biner to lock the tarp/staff together.

I use a wood shovel blank I got from the hardware store for a couple bucks. the rounded end seats well in the D-ring of my tarp.

One possibility is to just add a piece of cord as a wrist strap (or top strap), then put the tarps tie out line through the strap.

    It's not home made but...

I stick one of these under the edge of my rain fly. The prussic loop has never slipped and having a Texas Toothpick option is comforting. It has been in my luggage more that once and the TSA didn't seem to mind.
