Anyone use an inflatable for bottom insulation

I'm considering the purchase of a Blackbird 1.1 double hammock and a Z-pack standard cuben tarp and modifying an REI 700 fill down bag to make a top quilt with the assumption I can reduce it's weight from 35 oz to 28 oz, and using the Exped Synmat 7 UL pad I have as bottom insulation. If this will work I wont be adding anything to my current set up weight using a tent. My concern is with the pad, would it do the job in a hammock, works great on the ground.

Yes, you can use it. Lightly inflated on top of the hammock or, better, between the layers.

Practice at home or where you can bail if you don't like it.

Ive used a neo-air inflatable pad down to the mid 30s (26" w). Was quite warm enough with a 20* TQ and the tarp closed up to avoid the wind.


As Shug says, "you wont believe how much air you need to let out of it".

Installed mine in between the two hammock layers. Course it stayed put cause I was in a JRB bridge hammock. Hope all works well for you!

I use a Big Agnes down bag w/ insulated air core pad.hennesy exp/asem hammock.

When I was starting out I tried an inflatable pad and did not like it. Found CCF pads easier and more comfortable. Then I discovered UQs.

Pads work fine, if you can keep them in the hammock. My pads are quite warm, but if you are a restless sleeper, they can be a pain in the butt. (or cold on the butt, really) According to your pad, you can use various techniques of modifying and attaching it to the hammock, but it is all experimental to your particular gear. The DL on the blackbird helps A LOT.

It is good advice to use it in your yard a few nights and see how it does for you. You may love it or hate it. BB1.1 DL is a good choice, and so is zpacks tarp. You may want to check a few more places such as Hammockgear.com for the cuben and BIAS or WL for a little savings on the hammock. Almost all of the vendors on here make solid gear. Just find what is right for your needs.

If I still had my DL blackbird, I would let you try it out with your pad, as I am only 30-45 minutes away. I have a buddy in Gadsden that has a bb, but I will have to check and see if it is a DL.

I will have to give the BB a slight edge on comfort because of the footbox, but not by much at all.
