Question Questions about Tyvek -> Option for homeless youth

Greetings. I know people have been creatively using Tyvek for a while for ground cloths, bivys, and tarps. I work with a local homeless youth shelter that is having a hard time keeping tarps in stock to help people protect themselves and their belongings from the rain here in Western Oregon (and it rains a LOT). I'm looking into having a 9'x150' roll of Tyvek donated so I can work with them on making some DIY solutions.

But, I don't know that much about it. Is there a particular type or brand I should go for? Home Depot/Lowes have the rolls for around $160, I believe they are the Dupont brand. With Silnylon, we have lots of different material options, but wasn't sure for tyvek.

Thanks for any advice that you have. Let me know if I can provide more information that might be helpful, or if you have any questions about the project.

stick with the tyvek brand. many reasons.

for donations go the lumber yards. their shipments come in wrapped in tyvek.
also call the number on those big road signs. many of those signs are printed on tyvek. they just throw away outdated signs. (especially event signs near stadiums and casinos, they change often)
    Good Luck

Lots of billboards are printed in scrim vinyl which makes great tarps. It's heavier than tyvek but worth looking into.

    Try Roll Ends

If you do a search you can find my U. G. L. Y. TARP. I originally made it with sheet bends but now use Gorilla Tape for the tie-outs.

For free stuff talk to the contractors as they often have roll ends that would otherwise be destined for the landfill. To reduce the noise of new Tyvek (crinkle sound) throw it in a dryer on cold with a shoe to soften it up.

Consider a piece for a ground cloth and then show them some of the many ways you can set up a tarp.

Check out the yukon pack tarp configuration.
its a pack system while moving and a bed roll ,like a burrito tortilla as a shelter.
Its much more useful that way but still could be hung as a tarp.

Dupont is the only brand of Tyvek. There are other home wraps out there but how effective and durable they are as tarps I'm not sure. One thing to consider is that Tyvek needs to be "worked" before it's usable as a tarp. Throw it in a tumble dryer on air only (no heat) with a couple shoes for a few hours. crinkle it in your hands. Until you do that it's noiser than a freeway.

I asked a builder acquaintance for Tyvek and got handed some Typar instead....do NOT use this stuff.

It picks up, grabs and won't let go of every little piece of the forest floor. After using it for a couple of trips I kept wondering why y'all thought it was so wonderful...

Now I'm on the hunt for some Tyvek and the Typar is headed for the recycle bin!

That's really good of you to do that. I would be interested in seeing the designs you come up with. Good luck with your work and thank you for doing that.

It's kept me and my hammock dry every time I've used it. I can't speak to the long term durability though as it gets set up, taken down, folded and handled. After 1 season, mine doesn't have any rips or tears, but the surface in some places looks a little frayed. Still hasn't leaked though. From what I understand, water vapour can penetrate tyvek but not water droplets (kind of like gore-tex). That's why it's good keeping homes dry. Best of luck. You're doing a great thing.
