While in the market for a new Down TQ I looked at both cottage vendors and DIY plans. While the cottage vendors seemed to have great products as well as great reviews, I couldn't seem to swallow the price. I decided then to lean towards the DIY route after seeing the great instructions provided by Te-wa.
I looked at a variety of vendors for down and nylon but again found myself struggling with the price. I made the choice to sacrifice ounces for dollars.
I purchased 4 yards of ripstop nylon and 1 yard of mesh from Jo-Ann's for $16 after coupons. Next was to find a good source of down at a good price. I managed to find 2 down blankets from the local thrift store for $4 each. Harvesting down from the blankets was neither the easiest or enjoyable thing, but it worked. Each blanket yielded 7 ounces of down. The down measured out to be about 480 fill. Although it is most certainly not the best of down, it is hard to beat at less than a dollar an ounce.
The instructions were great and the quilt only took about 6 total hours to make. The final weight ended up being 1 lb 9 oz. It is a little heavier than most quilts, but I'll leave it up to you guys to decide if the extra ounces is worth the savings.
Here's some photos of the finished product. I hope you all enjoy it and please let me know what you think of it. Any and all feedback would be great. Thanks.
