    Hanging in Havasupai

Last week, I took my pack and hammock out to AZ to backpack down into the Havasupai Indian Reservation within the Grand Canyon, but just outside of the National Park. I spent 4 nights out and have attached a video. The trail begins on a hilltop 60 miles up Indian Road 18 and begins its descent into the canyon with a mile and a half of switchbacks. Supai, the village is about 8 miles in and the campgrounds are another 2 to 2.5 miles past that. I visited numerous falls including Old and New Navajo, Havasu, Mooney and Beaver. The river itself is a tributary of the Colorado. A week prior to my trip, much of the campground and some of the village structures were hit hard by flash floods and destroyed. The dogs in the video were indian dogs that ran loose within the canyon and village. Many hang out at the trailhead and wait for mule trains and backpackers. Two young dogs followed me around for 16 miles the first day and stayed with me until I left a few days later. I'll admit that I fell in love with a little red guy. They slept under my hammock each night and never left my side. One morning I woke up to the camp dogs playing tug of war with my hiking socks and they had carried my boots a ways from the site. It taught me a lesson!

Anytime Walter!! Steph may want the RV though after seeing how you ended up on your bum during your maiden voyage!

Thank you! Its a "must go" trip. Off season (before June and after mid September are probably the best times to avoid groups in the campground.

Beautiful place, I've been there twice. The first time was a month or two before the flood that killed Navajo falls, 2007 or 2008. I went back the next year to see the aftermath and I must say that it definately changed. I hiked back to see what was once Navajo Falls and I must say it was a solemn feeling. I would like to go back again.
