Is it true that you can't go back country camping in Germany? I heard that you have to stick to the designated camping grounds, anything else is illegal?

don't quote me here but: yes backcountry camping is pretty much illegal here. though in practise it's not as simple since, as far as I know, there are no national laws but this stuff is dealt with on state or even community basis.

For the last days I keept feeling sad about this, so today I did a little research. And guess what: The restrictions for camping away from designated areas _mostly_ relate to tent-camping. So as a rule of thumb it seems that where it's not specificly prohibited staying for one night in a _hammock_ should be finde I alreday knew that there was a grey area between "resting" and "camping", or in other words a bivy would be finde in most cases. seems like hanging hits the jackpot!
